The role of a Local Schools Committee Member (Governor)
Within England, there are over 300,000 School/Academy Governors (in our Trust they are known as Local School Committee Members), who form the largest volunteer force in the country.
The roles of individual Committee Members, and subsequently members of a Local Schools Committee, work collectively to perform a strategic role and carry out key functions such as:
- Discuss and set the aims and objectives for the Academy.
- Set the required policies for achieving those aims and objectives.
- Set the required targets for achieving those aims and objectives.
- Monitor and evaluate the progress that the Academy is making towards it’s set aims and objectives.
Finally the role of the Committee Member is to be a source of challenge and support to the Headteacher, i.e. a 'critical friend.' Committee Members drive and monitor the progress towards the Academy Improvement Plan.
The Local School Committee for Bampton Church of England School
Bampton Church of England School is a member of the Alumnis Multi-Academy Trust. The ultimate responsibility for the school rests with the Board of Directors of the Trust (Trust details and scheme of delegation can be found here) but much of the work of the Board is delegated to the Local Schools Committee. Some Committee Members are appointed by the Board whilst others are elected by parents or guardians of students at the School or by staff.
