How we teach Reading and Writing at Bampton

Reading

At Bampton, our youngest children learn to read and write through our phonics programme Read Write Inc.  Please see the guidance for helping your children at home.

Once the children have completed their phonics programme, they move on to using Accelerated Reader to support reading for pleasure and are encouraged to read for at least 20 minutes per night at home.

In lessons, we use CUSP for our reading and writing progression, ensuring that all the children understand and experience the creative pleasure of writing for a variety of purposes and in different genre.  We use quality texts and experiential learning to support the quality of their reading and  writing which is delivered through a structured two week long units of work.

Handwriting

Right from the start, children are taught how to form their letters correctly and the importance of a good sitting posture, hand position and pencil grip. Once this letter formation is secure, children are then taught how to join their letters so that their writing is legible and fast flowing.
